Brian “Homer” Dean Holmgaard, 61, of Otho, IA, passed away peacefully surrounded by the ones he held close to him on Friday, August 27, 2021, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at the Historic Bruce Funeral Home, 923 1st Avenue South – Fort Dodge. Memorial services will follow at 7:00 PM with Rev. Kendall Meyer of St. Paul Lutheran Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
Brian was born October 8, 1959, in Fort Dodge, the son of Willard “Red” and Irene (Dilges) Holmgaard of Fort Dodge. He was united in marriage to Evon Ashbaugh on April 7, 1991, in Las Vegas, NV.
He graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1978. He only had three jobs in his life. He worked for Hy-Vee and Land O' Lakes in his younger years, then Midstate Plumbing and Heating & Cooling for over 30 years in the HVAC and Sheetmetal Division where he retired from in 2020.
He belonged to Sheetmetal Workers Local 45, member of Manson Gun Club, Life time member of Iowa State Trap Shooting, and served on the Prairie Valley Community School Board. He also volunteered as a youth sports coach for little league and flag football.
Brian had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh. He always had a bubbly smile on his face with a laid-back attitude that was very contagious to the people he was around. He was a true handy-man that could fix or build anything. He enjoyed helping multiple neighbors and friends with home projects, and finding different projects he could work on with his son. His hobbies included: hunting, trapshooting, fishing, golf, reloading ammunition, and he loved playing cards. His main love though was spending time with his family and friends.
Brian is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years: Evon Holmgaard of Otho; his only son: Alec (Ally Paeper) of Badger, IA; other relatives and extended family: the Sharon Carlson family; sister-in-law: Mary Paynter; mother-in-law: Gloria Sargent; and multiple cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother: Bruce.
