Daniel Johnson, 91, of Des Moines, formerly of Fort Dodge, died Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at the Urbandale Health Care Center, Urbandale, Iowa.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Des Moines with the Rev. Gary Armstrong officiating. Inurnment will be held in Fort Dodge at a later date.

Daniel Johnson, son of Anton and Lydia Peterson (Jermeland) Johnson, was born July 20, 1920 in Clarion, Iowa. He attended Fort Dodge Public Schools, graduating from Senior High in 1938. Dan served in the U.S. Marine Corps. during WWII in the Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1945. Dan married Ruth Eva Tomlinson on December 9, 1945 in the Epworth Methodist Church in Fort Dodge. He worked at Tobins for a few years before joining the Fort Dodge Fire Dept. in 1952, where he served until retiring in 1979. Dan and Ruth Eva moved to Spirit Lake in 1979, returning to Fort Dodge in 1999 and subsequently moving to Des Moines in 2008.

Dan is survived by Ruth Eva, his wife of 66 years, son Curtis (Elizabeth) Johnson of Fort Dodge; daughter Joy Christine (Douglas) Musser of Des Moines; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his sister Mrs. Ray Dewey. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.

Dan was a skilled handy man and do-it-yourselfer who loved carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and painting. He enjoyed being outside working in the yard and fishing in Lake Okoboji and in Canada. His family was the center of his life, and he felt a strong sense of stewardship of Gods gifts.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
