Don B. Hanson, 83, died May 12, 2005 at the Trinity Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. Monday May 16, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. Sunday at the Bruce-Graham Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

Don Ballantyne Hanson was born March 15, 1922 to Ole C. and Barbara (Ballantyne) Hanson in Otho, IA. He graduated from the Otho High School in 1939 and then attended Fort Dodge Junior College. On April 6, 1942 he was united in marriage to Andrea E. Bear and they established their home in Otho. Don enlisted in the Civil Pilot Training in September 1942 and was in that program until it was discontinued ten months later. He then enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served for 31/2 years during WWII as a Radar Technician. Don received an honorable discharge in March 1946. Don, Andrea, and son Don returned to Otho where he was a partner in the Otho Mercantile Co., a family business. Besides being involved in the mercantile business, he developed the Hanson Gas Service. In 1957, Don, Andrea, and their three children moved to Fort Dodge where he was Assistant Manager of the Bottled Natural Gas Co. In 1963 Don became a wholesale representative of United Petroleum Co. and later Wanda Petroleum Co. for 15 years. In the late 1970’s he became a retail salesman for Morrissey Olds Co. He then went on to manage the National Car Rental Co. until his retirement in 1987.

Don was an avid reader, sports fan, and possessed a dry sense of humor. He enjoyed playing golf, taking trips throughout the United States and into foreign countries. Don was very involved in his family’s activities and looked forward to their visits.

Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge, the American Legion, and a past member of the Elk’s Club, Lakeside Golf Course, and the National Liquefied Petroleum Co.

Don’s memory will be cherished by his wife Andrea of 63 years; his three children; Don (Geri) Hanson of Iowa City, IA, Kurt (Debra) Hanson of Washington, IA and Marilyn (James) Yoder of Kalona, IA, 9 grandchildren; David (fiancée Andrea Biklen) of Des Moines, IA, Jenisa, Jared, Benjamin, and Kendon Hanson of Washington, IA, Greg Yoder of West Branch, IA, Stephanie (Chad) Yoder Bauer of Waterloo, IA, Elizabeth Yoder of Ames, IA, Sarah Yoder of Cedar Falls, IA, and one nephew; Cal Hanson of Mesa, AZ.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Barbara Hanson, his brother Ivan Hanson, his sister in law Jean Hanson, his sister Melva Peddicord, and his brother in law Lucian Peddicord.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, Fort Dodge or the Otho Methodist Church.
