Harvey E. Powell, 95, of Fort Dodge, died Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at the Fort Dodge Villa Care.

         

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday April 16, 2011 at the Epworth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kathy Kluis officiating.  Interment will follow in the North Lawn Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday at the Bruce-Graham Funeral Home.

         

Harvey was born December 20, 1915 the son of A.L. and Nettie (Rist) Powell in Luana, IA.  Harvey was raised on the home farm.  On January 11, 1941 Harvey was united in marriage to Ethel Joy Robey in Postville, IA.  During WWII he worked as a welder at the shipyards in San Francisco, CA.  He returned home in 1944 to work the home farm.  In 1950 the couple moved to Fort Dodge where he went to work for Bestwall Gypsum retiring after 33 years as a maintenance man.  Harvey was known as “The Walnut Man”.  He spent 20 years of retirement making knick knacks out of sliced walnuts.  He also mowed numerous yards for many years.  Harvey enjoyed playing 500.  Joy and Harvey loved to travel; they visited every state in the U.S. except Alaska.  The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 11, 1991 and Joy passed away in May of 1991.

         

Harvey is survived by his children, Charles Powell, David (Shirley) Powell, Kevin (June) Powell all of Fort Dodge, IA, Kent (Colleen) Powell of Commerce City, CA, one sister, Lillian Stockton of Anamosa, IA, grandchildren, Troy Powell, Steve (Jill) Powell, Shane (Vicki) Powell, Melanie Alson Maria (Rod) Lehman, Maridee Bell, Dawn Powell, Tari Wheeler, Joanne (John) Balmer, Jodi Lightfoot, Tina Summers, Tammy Lawrey, Rick Nelson, 38 great grandchildren and 20 great-great grandchildren.

         

Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his parents, wife Joy, four brothers, two sisters, one granddaughter, one great granddaughter and one great-great grandson.

         

Memorials maybe left to the discretion of the family.
