Helen McCarroll
Helen McCarroll, 92, died Sunday, November 11, at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Helen Jean Brownell Wry was born July 8, 1915, in Pointe-de-Bute, New Brunswick, Canada. She earned her nursing degree in 1938 from Saint John General Hospital, Saint John, New Brunswick and continued to work at that hospital after graduation. On July 2, 1941, she married Dr. J. G. “Gus” McCarroll. They spent 3 weeks together before he left for World War II. Reunited in 1944, they subsequently lived in England and Canada before moving to Fort Dodge in 1961.
Helen had a keen sense of adventure and was always ready for the next fishing trip, journey to Ireland, bridge game or party. She loved to walk on ocean beaches and always managed to find another rock to add to her bowl by the fireplace. In later years her dog Ben was her constant companion.
Helen is survived by her daughter Sue (Terry) Proescholdt of Ames, her son Bill (Terri) McCarroll of Spencer, grandchildren Jennifer McCarroll, Andrew Proescholdt, Sara McCarroll and James Proescholdt, and her canine companion Ben. She was preceded in death by her husband Gus and brother Gerald. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 17 at 1:30 pm at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Dodge with Marcia Rich CLP officiating. Friends are invited to call at the family home on Friday evening from 4–8 pm. Memorial contributions can be made to the Animal Rescue League, Des Moines, IA or the scholarship fund of First Presbyterian Church for assistance for students entering the healthcare field.
