Helen Moon

March 11, 1919 — May 25, 2015

Helen Louise Moon passed into the arms of her Savior, May 25, 2015 at the Klein Center, West Burlington, Iowa where she had resided for the past 18 months.  She previously made her residence with her daughter and son-in-law, Don and Linda Baker, Burlington, IA, after spending most of her married life in Fort Dodge, IA.

Born on March 11, 1919, in New Orleans, Louisiana, she was the second daughter of Kitty and Gerritt Grooters.  Later the family moved to Iowa Falls, IA where she went to school until her family moved to Fort Dodge, before her senior year.  She was an accomplished violinist and singer and attended 2 years of college on a music scholarship. Helen worked at Trelors Inn in Fort Dodge and there she met Edward Moon. They were united in marriage in August of 1938 and together they built two homes and raised four children before Edwards death in 1997.

Mrs. Moon worked in the admittance office of Lutheran Hospital before going to Sears in accounting, and later taking the job of payroll clerk for the Fort Dodge School System which she held for 26 years.  She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, singing for the Lord.  Her favorite song was “His Eyes on the Sparrow” and she would sing that with her special caregiver Esther Brooks.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, a granddaughter, 3 brothers, 1 sister and numerous aunts and uncles.  The proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren, “Grandma Honey” to 17 great grandchildren and numerous great great grandchildren.  Two daughters  remain to carry on her legacy, Linda (Don) Baker of Burlington, IA, and Kathy (Lenis) Schoepke of Littleton, CO and daughter-in-law Esther Moon.

Graveside Services will be held on Friday, May 29, 2015 at 11:00 am at North Lawn Cemetery in Fort Dodge.  A reception will be held after the graveside service at Bruce Funeral Home fellowship room. In lieu of flowers the family asks contributions be made to Special Needs Foundation, 829 Harrison, Burlington, IA 52501.
