Howard E. Gunnerson, 81, Friendship Haven, Fort Dodge, died Saturday, December 6, 2003, at Trinity Regional Medical Center. Memorial Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2003, at the 3rd Floor Chapel of Heritage Apartments, Friendship Haven, with the Rev. Bill Trembly officiating. Inurnment will be at the Gowrie Township Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a time of fellowship following the services. Memorials may be directed to the Friendship Haven New Chapel Fund.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Judith and Jim Randolph, Rochester, MN, Janet and Loy Stromberg, Pine River, MN; son and daughter-in-law Gary and Helena Gunnerson, Darien, IL; 9 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; and brother Charles , of Laguna Hills, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Lucy, and twin brother Harley in World War II.

Howard Earl Gunnerson was born February 8, 1922, in LeMars, Iowa, the son of Gilbert and Florence (Holm) Gunnerson. He attended various schools in Iowa including Fort Dodge, and graduated from Mason City High School in 1939. He attended Fort Dodge Junior College; the University of Iowa; Iowa State University; and graduated from the University of Florida in Civil Engineering. He married Lucille Mockett in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was recalled during the Korean War. After military service he was employed by the Iowa State Highway Commission and Department of Transportation for 31 years and was chief engineer from 1967 to 1977. He was employed by the Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska Railroad Transportation District for 14 years. He retired in 1991 after a 45 year career in engineering. He was a member of the First Christian Church; 87th Infantry Division Association; and American Legion.
