John Martin Schaupp was born June 27, 1921 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Judge John M. and Hazel (Woods) Schaupp . He attended Fort Dodge schools and graduated high school from St. Johns Military Academy in Wisconsin. John attended Grinnell College and then enlisted in the United States Navy. He served during World War II in the Solomon Islands. After the service, he went to Michigan where he attended General Motors School. John returned to Fort Dodge and was later married to Frances Kramme. John worked for Gjelefold Construction for many years. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and stock car racing. He liked hiking and exploring throughout the United States. John collected Native American artifacts and he had a passion for buying things that he didnt need. He was past president of the Fort Dodge Snowmobilers Club and an active JayMar coffee club participant. John especially enjoyed Lake Okoboji throughout his lifetime.
John Martin Schaupp died September 7, 2013 under Hospice care at the Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
He is survived by his children: Scott (Candice Millington) Schaupp of Nokomis, FL, Karen Schaupp of Bradenton, FL and Nannette Schaupp of Hendersonville, NC, two grandchildren, Adam and wife Amanda Lunde of Sparta, WI and Sara and husband Kyle Fanelli of Everett, WA and four great grandchildren; Destiny and Jadah Lunde and Dessa and Chase Fanelli. He was preceded in death by his parents, former wife Frances and brother Bradley. Memorials are preferred to Webster County Historical Society, Blanden Memorial Art Museum or the Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum in Okoboji. A gathering of family and friends will be held at a the Ringland-Smeltzer House in Fort Dodge on Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A private family interment was held at Oakland Cemetery.
