John E. Smith, 82, of Fort Dodge, IA, died Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at his home. Memorial services will be held at 5:00 PM on Monday, May 18, 2026, at the Historic Bruce Funeral Home, 923 1st Avenue South, with Rev. John Elkin officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. The family encourages you to wear your Hawkeye gear. Memorials may be directed to the family. Arrangements are with Historic Bruce Funeral Home of Fort Dodge.
John Eugene was born September 11, 1943, in Fort Dodge, the son of Lyle and Eva (Artzer) Smith. He attended St. Edmond Catholic School. On December 9, 1967, he was united in marriage to Frances A. (Echelberger) at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Over the years, he worked at Kresge Dime Store, Stava Manufacturing (Wahoo, NE), Mead Container and Frigidaire (22 years) until his retirement in 2008. Known for his steadfast enthusiasm and commitment to sports, John enjoyed watching football, basketball, and baseball. He was a dedicated fan of the Hawks, Cubs, and Browns, teams he cheered on with great passion throughout his life. In addition to spectating, John also found joy in playing pool and snooker.
John is survived by 3 children: Michelle Nelson of Canton, IL, Chad Smith of Fort Dodge, and Jason Smith of Fort Dodge; 3 grandchildren: Kegan Nelson of Fort Dodge, Kendra Friesth and husband Tanner of Duncombe, IA, and Xander Smith of Fort Dodge; 2 great grandchildren: Renley Jo and Ryder Scott; sister: Betty Ann Hefley of Fort Dodge; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his fur baby: Eli.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2025; and 3 siblings: James Smith, Kathy Witzke and Eddie Joe Smith.
