John Steburg

John Steburg, 87, of Fort Dodge died Thursday, December 11, 2003, at the Trinity Regional Medical Center, Fort Dodge.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 16, 2003, at Bruce’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Officiating will be the Father Steph Hall of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Interment will follow in the North Lawn Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by the VFW Post 1856. Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

John was born November 28, 1916, the son of William and Jennie (Galen) Steburg in Fort Dodge, IA. John entered into active duty on April 13, 1944, in the United States Army and served his country until his honorable discharge on December 30, 1945. During his service to his country John earned the following decorations and citations; 2 overseas service bars, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 2 bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

On September 19, 1936, John was united in marriage to Ada Merrill in Fort Dodge, IA. Over the years John has enjoyed many activities including fishing the local rivers and streams. He enjoyed gardening, feeding the wildlife, reading westerns, and checking for the local chipmunk that John called “Charlie”. Following retirement John began doing wood working. The beneficiaries of his many projects have been his family.

John was a life member of the VFW, and a member of the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers Local 6-503.

Those thankful for having shared in John’s life include his wife, Ada, two daughters, Beverly (Gordon) Demery of Duncomb, Carol (Mike) Gehlhausen of Fort Dodge, two sons, John (Betsy) Steburg of Pahrump, Nevada, Paul (Meredee) Steburg of Fort Dodge, two sisters, Patricia (Beryl) Vance of Fort Dodge, Loretta Fox of Fort Dodge, 17 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren.

Mr. Steburg was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers, and one grandchild.
