Mildred G. Rathke the youngest of 4 children was born to William and Annie (Bennett) Rathke on November 16, 1919 at her parents farm 2 miles south of Jackson, Minnesota.  Her family later moved to Humboldt, Iowa where Mildred attended Humboldt Public Schools where she graduated in 1937.

Shortly after her 18th birthday, on December 17, 1937, she married Charles M. Vinsand at Webster City, Iowa.  They farmed and lived on farms in the Badger, Humboldt, and Deer Creek areas before moving into Badger in February 1948. She has lived in her present home in Badger for over 66 years, raising 12 children. Her first child born  February 1940 and her 12th child was born January, 1964.

Her children are; Donald Vinsand, Janet (Duane) Knudson, Allen Vinsand, Carol (David) Gibson, James (Carla) Vinsand, Roger (Regina) Vinsand, Thomas Vinsand, Kenneth Vinsand, Carla (Jerry) Hansen, Patti Henderson, Sheila (Jack) Davis and Terry Vinsand.

Her husband Charles, son Terry and grandson Patrick all passed away in early 1996. Four of her childrens spouses have also passed away, Larry Sallee (Carla), Donna Vinsand (Allen), Sharon Vinsand (Donald) and Jean Vinsand (Kenneth).  All of Mildreds brothers and sisters, Charles brothers and sisters, and all of their spouses have passed away as well as many of their children.

For many years, Mildred worked for several restaurants in Badger and also assisted with the Norwegian Suppers and Kumla Suppers at the Badger Lutheran Church before retiring at the age of 70 in 1989. After retiring she often held bake sales at her home until she was over 80 in 2000 (some customers referred to her as the Apple Pie Lady).  She was a member of the Badger Lutheran Church, the Badger 39ers, and a Hospice Meet and Eat group which she attended regularly. She thoroughly enjoyed visiting with friends and family.  Mildred in her “spare time” knitted over 100 afghans, most of them for her children and grandchildren.

At the age of 94 she said; “I am in pretty good health when you consider how many children I have raised and my age.”  Her offspring when you include their spouses number well over 100.
