Vernon Dale Cummings, 87, of Fort Dodge, died Friday February 15, 2008 at the Trinity Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the Celebration Center of Friendship Haven with the Rev. Ron Kitterman officiating. There will be no visitation. Bruce-Graham Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dale is survived by his wife Donna, son Scott and his wife, Kristin, and their children, Karina and Megan all of Newbury Park, California; son Richard and his wife, Mary, of Austin, Texas; daughter Carolyn Rogers and her husband, Mike, and their children, Justin and Jenna, all of Fort Dodge; twin brother, Dean and his wife Kay; numerous nieces and nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Gladys Cummings, an infant son, brother, Robert Cummings and sister, Katherine Fellers.

Dale was born on January 26, 1921 in Omaha, NE. The family moved to Fort Dodge and he graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1939. Dale continued his education by attending Iowa State College in Ames for 2 years. He then attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, serving his country as a pilot. Dale married Donna Tay in 1951 and they made their home in Fort Dodge. Dale was a mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Fort Dodge for 34 years. In 1980, they moved to Illinois where he was printer for Principia College. The couple lived in Storm Lake for 9 years then in Spirit Lake before returning to Fort Dodge in 2007. Dale sang in the Fort Dodge Civic Glee Club for 27 years, serving as President for one year. He was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist in Fort Dodge, serving as a soloist and on various committees. Dale was also a member of the Golden K Kiwanis.

Dale was a devoted husband and father. He was a hard worker and a handyman who could fix most anything. He enjoyed playing many card games with his children and grandchildren.
